Hi, I'm David Cavill.
I'm not a developer. I never have been. I sit somewhere between IT and Operations: the person in the room who understands the technology well enough to translate it for the business, and understands the business well enough to push back on the technology.
For over 15 years I've led technology and operations initiatives across finance, analytics, and business transformation. I've managed enterprise platform migrations, built AI-enabled workflows, designed automation systems, and delivered projects that generated millions in new revenue and significant cost savings, all without writing a single line of production code.
What I kept seeing, year after year, was the same pattern: businesses paying monthly subscription fees for software they did not fully own, vendors raising prices knowing switching costs were high, and data sitting on someone else's servers with no guarantee it was truly private.
The tools existed to fix this. That gap is exactly where RunFreeApps was born.

The Background Behind the Build
My career has lived at the intersection of technology and operations.
My hands-on experience spans financial services, analytics, business intelligence, and enterprise automation, including AI-enabled workflows using tools like Microsoft Copilot, Power Automate, Claude, and custom API integrations. I hold a PMP certification and have spent my career translating complex technology into business outcomes, which is exactly what RunFreeApps does for self-hosting.
Why I Built RunFreeApps
Instead of Just Using It
When I started exploring self-hosting for my own projects I quickly realized the tools were genuinely powerful: n8n instead of Zapier, NocoDB instead of Airtable, Mattermost instead of Slack. The savings were real and the performance was better.
But the setup process was painful even for someone with my background. Docker configurations, environment variables, server management, SSL certificates, domain routing: each step was a potential failure point with no friendly interface to help.
I build SaaS products. My work is in automation and operations strategy. I needed these tools to just work: deployed, secured, and running, without becoming a DevOps engineer.
So I built the platform I wished existed. RunFreeApps is what happens when someone with deep operations and technology experience, but not a developer background, decides the gap between self-hosting potential and self-hosting reality is too wide to ignore.
