AI receptionist vs. answering service for plumbers, which one actually closes the gap?

Last updated: August 26, 2026

60.1%

of plumbing businesses we audited have no after-hours channel of any kind, not SMS, chat, AI, or otherwise

17.8%

have an SMS option, the most common of the automated channels we could detect from a website

0.7%

mention an AI assistant, the least common of the three we could detect

Neither is common yet, so this isn't really "old way vs. new way." Our audit found automated after-hours coverage of any kind is still rare in plumbing: 17.8% of plumbing-business websites mention SMS, 0.5% have live chat, and 0.7% mention AI. A traditional phone-based answering service isn't something our website audit measures directly, but the underlying question, does a lead who reaches out after hours get to anyone, is the same one either option is trying to answer.

A phone-based answering service is usually a call-routing arrangement rather than something a website audit like ours would ever detect, worth noting so the number above isn't misread as "answering services barely exist," only that we can't measure their prevalence the same way we measure a website's own features.

The two work differently. A traditional answering service puts a live person between you and your incoming phone calls: they answer your business line, take a message or do basic triage, and pass it along. That's a real, useful thing if a high share of your leads come in as phone calls to your existing number. An AI receptionist like SeenOnMain works off your website's quote or contact form instead: the moment a lead submits it, you get an instant text and a live call offering to connect you right then. If most of your leads come through your site rather than direct calls, that's the more direct fix.

Cost tends to point the same direction. Answering services are typically billed per-minute or per-seat, so cost scales with call volume, which can spike during exactly the busy periods (a cold snap, a storm) when you'd most want the coverage. A form-triggered AI alert is usually a flat monthly cost regardless of volume.

Given how rare either option still is in this market (60.1% of the plumbing businesses we audited have neither, or anything else automated), the honest takeaway isn't which one wins in the abstract, it's that adopting either one puts you ahead of most of your competitors on this specific point today.
