Executive Summary

We audited the public websites of 1,965 real home‑service businesses across eight trades (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, landscaping, house cleaning, roofing, pest control, and garage door repair), spread across 30 U.S. metros, to measure whether they're digitally equipped to capture and respond to a new lead. Most aren't.

7.2% of businesses we found through Google, businesses Google itself lists as having a live website, turned out to be unreachable when we actually tried to load them. Of the sites that did load, just one in 1,823 reached "Excellent" on our Digital Lead Readiness scale. Roughly one in five made any kind of explicit promise about how fast they'd respond to an inquiry. AI or chatbot assistance, the fastest‑growing category in customer response tooling, showed up on seven sites out of 1,823. And businesses currently paying for search ads in their own trade scored no better on lead readiness than those that aren't: if anything, slightly worse.

This is a digital lead‑readiness audit, not a live response‑time study. Every figure here describes what a business's website itself offers or claims, not how quickly a real inquiry gets a real reply. That is a deliberate, disclosed scope for this phase (see §10). A follow‑on live‑inquiry test is the natural next step and has not yet been run.

Why This Study Matters

Response speed is one of the most studied variables in sales, and one of the most misquoted. A widely repeated claim, "78% of customers buy from whoever responds first," turns out to have no traceable primary source. We could not verify it against any original study, so we do not use it here.

The defensible, citable research comes from the Lead Response Management study conducted by James Oldroyd with MIT and InsideSales.com, later expanded across 5.7 million inbound leads at 400+ companies. The odds of successfully contacting a lead are 100x higher when the callback happens within 5 minutes versus 30 minutes, and conversion rates run roughly 8x higher within a 5‑minute window than after 6+ minutes.[1][2] That same research found 57.1% of first call attempts happen more than a week after the lead came in, a delay problem, not a demand problem.[2]

Home‑service businesses are a natural place to test whether that finding holds up in the field. Leads are often urgent (a leaking water heater, a dead A/C unit), and jobs are high‑value. Per this study, the tools to respond fast (SMS, booking, live chat, AI‑assisted intake) exist and are cheap to add, yet are largely absent from the actual market. That is the gap this report measures.

Methodology, in brief

Businesses were discovered via the Google Places API across eight trades and 30 geographically diverse U.S. metros. Each business's own website, homepage plus up to five related pages (contact, quote, booking, service, emergency), was then crawled directly. Two layers of analysis ran on every page: deterministic pattern detection for objective signals (a contact form exists, a booking widget is embedded), and an AI‑assisted read grounded in those same signals for judgment calls a keyword can't make (does this copy amount to an actual response‑time promise, or just "contact us"). Every business was also checked against a real, place‑resolved list of businesses currently running paid search ads for their trade in that same metro, not a blind name match.

Who's in the sample

Trades: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, landscaping, house cleaning, roofing, pest control, garage door repair. One representative search keyword per trade (e.g. "plumber," "HVAC repair").
Geography: 30 U.S. metros spanning the Southeast, Texas, the Mountain West, the Midwest, and the West Coast.
Inclusion rule: any business Google Places returns for that keyword and metro, with a listed website, up to a per‑metro cap that varies by trade (plumbing's larger cap reflects its size as a category; per‑trade totals range from 154 to 467 businesses). Franchises and independents are both included; known directories and lead‑gen marketplaces (Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, and similar) are excluded.

Overall Results

Of 1,965 businesses sampled, 1,823 (92.8%) had a working, reachable website; 142 (7.2%) did not, despite Google listing a website URL. Reachable sites averaged ~34 out of 100 on our Digital Lead Readiness Score (methodology in §8), and split into tiers as follows:

Results by Trade

Seven of the eight trades still land in the same "High opportunity" tier on average. HVAC is the lone exception, the only trade whose average crosses into "Developing." Landscaping and house cleaning remain the two clear laggards, and landscaping in particular earns its own explanation below.

Tier reflects each trade's average score against the same bands used per‑business in §4 (Excellent 80+, Strong 60–79, Developing 40–59, High opportunity below 40). HVAC is the only trade whose average clears the Developing threshold; the other seven land in High opportunity. Individual businesses within most trades do reach Strong or even Excellent; the trade‑wide averages mostly don't.

Explaining the landscaping result

Landscaping's 20.3 is not just the lowest score of the eight trades, it sits meaningfully below the next‑lowest (house cleaning, at 25.6), and further still below the six trades clustered between 29 and 40. That gap has now held across three separate sample sizes (a 10‑business pilot, a 105‑business first run, and this 154‑business result), so we're confident it's a real trade‑level pattern rather than sampling noise.

An earlier, smaller version of this dataset also showed landscaping had the lowest rate of unreachable websites, which suggested a tidy explanation: simpler sites break less often but also do less. That specific claim does not hold up now that all eight trades are in. Roofing (3.1% unreachable), pest control (3.8%), and garage door repair (4.3%) are all more reliably online than landscaping (7.8%), while scoring well above it. Reachability and readiness turn out to be separate stories that don't track cleanly together across the full trade set.

What still holds is urgency. Nobody has a landscaping emergency the way a burst pipe or a dead A/C unit in July creates one, and even garage door repair, pest control, and roofing carry some real version of urgency (security risk, infestation, storm damage) that landscaping simply doesn't. That gap in urgency is the more defensible driver of the readiness gap.

Advertisers vs. Non‑Advertisers

628 of 1,965 businesses (32.0%) were confirmed, by matching Google Place ID rather than a fuzzy name guess, to be currently running paid search ads in their own trade. Among the 1,823 reachable sites, that gives a real comparison: 583 confirmed advertisers versus 1,240 non‑advertisers.

The result runs opposite to what a marketing pitch would predict. Businesses paying for search traffic did not build better lead capture than businesses that aren't. If anything, they built slightly less:

Advertisers do edge out non‑advertisers on the two channel‑based signals, SMS and live chat, but lose ground on the two intake‑based signals, booking and an explicit response‑time promise, and the net effect on the overall score runs against them. A business spending real money to generate a lead is not, on this evidence, more likely to have built the machinery to actually convert it once it arrives.

After‑Hours Response & AI Adoption

55.1% of reachable sites use emergency or 24/7 language somewhere on the page, but only 18.0% offer SMS and just 2.6% have any live chat. That distance between claiming to be always available and actually building a channel for it is one of this report's more citable findings on its own.

AI adoption is the starkest number in the whole dataset: 7 businesses out of 1,823 mention an AI assistant or chatbot anywhere on their site. "AI adoption in home services is currently near zero" is a defensible, attention‑getting, and true statement from this data.

The Digital Lead Readiness Score, explained

The score is built from 100 points across five weighted categories: digital intake (contact and quote forms, booking, mobile‑friendliness), after‑hours signals, response‑time signals, lead‑qualification depth (does the intake form ask for service type, address, timing), and multi‑channel reach. Exact point weights, for reproducibility:

One caveat is central to how this section should be described publicly. The live response‑time test was not run in this phase, so the response‑readiness and follow‑up components are built from what a site claims or offers, not from a measured reply. For that reason the report calls this a Digital Lead Readiness Score throughout, not the fuller "Lead Response Readiness Score" from the original concept, which would fairly imply real, measured response behavior.

Note on the multi‑channel category: booking can contribute to a business's score twice, once as an intake feature (digital intake, above) and again as one of the five channel types counted here. That is intentional, not double‑counting of the same fact; the two categories are asking different questions (does a booking option exist at all, versus how many distinct ways can a lead reach this business). A 100/100 score requires all five channel types present. The ceiling is now genuinely reachable; one business in this sample scored high enough to reach the Excellent tier.

Recommendations

Every recommendation below is tied to a specific finding earlier in this report, and each is a behavior or practice, not a product. Where a live response‑time test would sharpen a recommendation, that is noted rather than assumed.

For operators

  • ·Confirm your own site actually loads on a fresh connection, on a schedule. 7.2% of businesses in this sample had a website Google itself lists as live that would not load for us at all (§4). An unreachable site converts nothing, and hosting or DNS failures are usually cheap to catch and fix.
  • ·If your site claims 24/7 or emergency service, back it with a channel that actually works after hours. 55.1% of sites made an after‑hours claim; only 18.0% offered SMS and 2.6% offered chat (§7). The gap between the claim and the channel is a real, checkable, source of lost leads.
  • ·State a specific response‑time commitment if you can meet one. Only 23.1% of sites made any explicit promise (§4), and the research this report opens with (§2) ties fast callback directly to higher contact and conversion odds. A vague "contact us" does not do this job.
  • ·If you are paying for search traffic, check whether your intake matches your spend. Confirmed advertisers in this sample scored lower on average than non‑advertisers, and notably lower on booking (§6). Money spent generating a lead is only worth what your site does with it once it arrives.

For the industry

  • ·Trade associations and marketing vendors serving the lowest‑scoring trades, landscaping and house cleaning in particular (§5), have a clear, quantified gap to close: neither trade lacks demand or urgency at the individual job level, but both lack the intake infrastructure that higher‑urgency trades have built.
  • ·AI‑assisted response tooling is not yet a competitive differentiator in this market, it is closer to a blank space: 0.38% adoption (§4) means almost no business in any of the eight trades sampled has built or bought this capability yet.
  • ·The gap between claiming availability and building a channel for it (§7) is large enough, and general enough across trades, that it looks structural rather than a few outliers. That is worth industry attention independent of any single vendor's product.

What is deliberately not here: a claim about how fast these businesses actually respond to a real inquiry. That requires the live response‑time test described in §1 and §10, which has not been run. Every recommendation above is scoped to what a business's website demonstrably offers, not to behavior we did not measure.

Full Methodology & Limitations

  • 01 Businesses were discovered via Google Places Text Search, one representative keyword per trade, across 30 U.S. metros. Results with no listed website were excluded before crawling.
  • 02 Each site's homepage plus up to five likely‑relevant sub‑pages were crawled directly. A site that never loaded is recorded as unreachable, not scored as absent.
  • 03 Feature signals are deterministic (regex and DOM pattern matching). Judgment‑based fields, such as whether copy is really a response‑time promise, are confirmed by an AI classifier grounded in those same signals rather than deciding from scratch.
  • 04 This is a digital‑readiness audit of what each site offers or claims, not a measurement of actual reply speed. No test inquiry was submitted to any business in this phase.
  • 05 Advertiser matching (§6) starts from a nationwide, keyword‑level list of paid‑search accounts (not geo‑scoped at that step), then resolves each advertiser name against each of the 30 sampled metros individually. A match only counts once it resolves to a real Google Place ID, either one already in our sample or a new one added specifically because the match was confirmed. It is not a spend‑verified match, and it checks the top 5 advertisers per trade rather than every advertiser running ads.
  • 06 Every business record, including the ones a reader may want to spot‑check, is retained with its evidence: the page URLs crawled and the specific signals detected, for audit.

Sources & Data

This report combines first‑party audit data (the crawl and scoring described above) with three external tools and one prior body of academic and industry research, all named directly rather than buried in a footnote.
