How much does a missed roofing lead really cost?
Last updated: September 5, 2026
100x
higher odds of making contact with a lead when you call back within 5 minutes vs. 30 (MIT / InsideSales.com)
57.1%
of first call attempts happen more than a week after the lead came in, across 5.7M leads studied
18.6%
of the 194 roofing businesses we audited make any explicit response-time promise at all
There's no honest single dollar figure, and you should be skeptical of anyone who gives you one. What's real and well-documented is the mechanism: contact odds drop sharply the slower you call back, and in our own audit of 194 roofing-business websites, only 18.6% make any explicit promise about how fast they'll respond at all, let alone actually deliver on speed.
A claim you'll see repeated everywhere is "78% of customers buy from whoever responds first." While building our own research report we went looking for the original source of that exact number and couldn't find one, no traceable study, no dataset, nothing to cite. We don't use it, and it's worth treating skeptically anywhere else you see it.
The real, citable research is the Lead Response Management study conducted by James Oldroyd with MIT and InsideSales.com, later expanded across 5.7 million inbound leads at 400+ companies. The odds of successfully contacting a lead are 100x higher when the callback happens within 5 minutes versus 30 minutes, and conversion rates run roughly 8x higher within a 5-minute window than after 6+ minutes. That same research found 57.1% of first call attempts happen more than a week after the lead came in, a delay problem, not a demand problem.
Layer our own roofing-specific finding on top of that: just 18.6% of the roofing businesses we crawled make any kind of explicit response-time promise on their site, AI-confirmed, not just a keyword match. Most aren't even claiming to be fast, which means the ones that actually are fast, especially in the hours right after a storm, are competing against a low bar.
So instead of a made-up industry average, the honest answer is: the cost depends entirely on your own lead volume, close rate, and average ticket, numbers only you actually know. The free Lead Loss Calculator below runs the real math using your own figures instead of guessing at someone else's.
