Missed Call Text-Back

Last updated: September 30, 2026

What Is Missed Call Text-Back?

Missed call text-back (also called "text-back" or "missed call automation") is a feature that automatically sends a text message to a caller when their call to a business's phone line goes unanswered, so the business can still make contact even though nobody picked up.

This is a common feature in call-tracking systems, business phone platforms, and some CRM tools. It works by monitoring a business's main phone line. When an inbound call isn't answered within a set number of rings, the system automatically sends a text, typically something like "Sorry we missed your call, how can we help?", to the number that called in. That opens a text conversation even though the voice call itself failed to connect.

It's a genuinely useful feature for businesses whose leads mostly come in as inbound calls to a single phone number. It recovers some of the contacts that would otherwise go completely unanswered, especially outside business hours or during a busy stretch.

52%

of calls to home-service businesses are answered by a person (73% for calls that last more than 30 seconds), so roughly half of callers hit voicemail or a ring-out

55%

of home-service businesses never ask the caller to buy or book the job, even when someone does answer

45%

of home-service phone leads convert on the call, which is why the call you miss is worth recovering

How this relates to SeenOnMain

SeenOnMain includes missed call text-back through a free, dedicated toll-free business line on every plan that rings your own cell. It doesn't monitor your existing number; you give customers the new one. Before the call connects, the caller hears a short notice and presses 1 to allow a text. If you miss the call, a caller who pressed 1 gets one text from your business saying you'll get right back to them, and a caller who didn't press 1 gets nothing. Texts only go out between 8am and 8pm your time, and every reply after that is typed by you, not an AI. Separately, when a lead submits your web contact or quote form, SeenOnMain instantly texts and calls you so you can respond in real time.

Questions About Missed Call Text-Back

What is missed call text-back?

Missed call text-back is a feature that automatically sends a text message to a caller when their call to a business's phone line goes unanswered, so the business can still make contact even though nobody picked up.

Is missed call text-back the same as an AI receptionist?

No. Missed call text-back only sends an automated text after a call goes unanswered; it doesn't hold a conversation. An AI receptionist actually answers the call live and talks with the caller in real time. They're related but distinct categories.

Does SeenOnMain offer missed call text-back?

Yes, on the free dedicated business line every plan includes. Callers are asked first and press 1 to allow a text; if you miss the call, those callers get one text back from your business, only between 8am and 8pm your time. It doesn't monitor your existing phone number, and every reply after that first text is typed by you, not an AI.

How many calls to home-service businesses actually get answered?

Only about half. Invoca's 2026 Home Services benchmark report, covering more than 70 million calls, found 52% of calls to home-service businesses are answered by a person, and 55% of those businesses never ask the caller to book the job. Phone leads that do connect convert at about 45%, so an unanswered call is a lead that was likely to become a job.
